the one behind the camera: Meet Allison Leonard with kismet visuals

Allison has been part of the The Scout Guide family for several years now and we’re so grateful for all the work she puts into making our guide so beautiful! Her compassion and kindness is contagious! We’re even more excited for you to see Volume 6 and the magic Allison has produced. Stay tuned for February 2022!

How did you get started in photography?

I actually went to school for graphic design. I took a film class in college and hated it. Fast forward 5 years, I got married and had kids. We planned family photos at a park and while we were there I thought to myself “I could do this” and started it as a hobby so I could take better pictures of my kids. A few years after that, my friends asked me to shoot their wedding and I never thought of myself as a professional photographer, so I turned it down. They asked and convinced me enough, that I ended up doing their wedding and the rest is history!  I quit my graphic design job in 2015 and went full-time in photography. It started out as a hobby that accidentally turned into a career!

What is your goal in your photography?

My goal is to document happy moments but what I love most about this job is also how I get to build relationships with clients who then end up like family and friends to me.

How did you start working with TSG?

I had picked up the Volume 2 Scout Guide awhile back and fell in love with the photographs and the graphic design of the book! I knew nothing about it so I ended up following TSG on Instagram. About a year later, Abigail reached out to me saying she had heard really great stuff about my work and wanted to me help with the photography for the upcoming volume. We met up and she hired me for the next edition. The first volume I shot was Volume 3 and now we just wrapped up Volume 6!

How is shooting for TSG different than your other work (weddings, newborns, families, etc.)?

For families and weddings, I’m documenting a day or a time in their life — capturing memories and moments. TSG is different because there is more of a creative process behind the entire book. There is so much time and thought that goes into the planning and preparation of each volume. I am executing a plan, design and creative vision.

What has been the best part about being the photographer for TSG?

I think meeting new people and building the connections. I’m such a people person and I love to make new friends. I also love seeing my work being printed rather than just on social media. When families and couples print their images for their homes, I don’t get to see that everyday. I can pick up a Scout Guide any time and see my work brought to life. It’s a very rewarding feeling.

You’ve been so busy this Fall shooting for Volume 6, what shoot was your favorite and why?

Oh, that’s a hard one! There were so many fun shoots this year and they’re all so different in their own ways. Shooting the editor spread is always fun and Abigail always has a cool, fun vision that I get to help bring to life!
